Unresolved Question
Is it cruel to not give you kids sugary foods?
I don't want them to get fat and unhealthy, so maybe once a month they get a treat.

No I just wouldn't give them to much but a snack everyday once a day is not bad

Cruel?! Seriously? No. It isn't cruel. Your kids will probably be envious of their friends who have Little Debbie cakes at school, but ultimately they will just be healthier, and already in the habit of not eating that kind of stuff when they're older. I wasn't allowed to have any of that sugary stuff when I was little, and I turned out just fine. :)

Not at all, in fact, it might be cruel to give them to them at the rate we were used to growing up. Sugar is addictive, so there's so sense in introducing sugary things until they start asking for it, and then teach them about health and give in moderation. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she's still never had syrup on her pancakes and doesn't know what she's missing :)

Becky, as I write this to you, I am eating a Snickers and drinking a 32 oz Dr. Pepper...I was raised in a home where food=love and my mom always thought it was "kind" to give me and my brother sweets. I raised my children the same way; however, you seem to be very health conscious to which I commend your effort. You raising children on fruits and health food your children will equate that as love as well not denial.
Kudos to you! Are they denying you their sweetness? Think about it! :)

of course not!
kids dont need candy, and with this obesity epidemic more people should follow in your foot steps.

No, it's probably better parenting to limit sugary foods. I wouldn't, however, cut them off entirely. Unless they have health problems, sugary foods can be perfectly fine for kids in moderation. Save them for special occasions like birthdays or holidays. In the meantime, make sure you have lots of healthy alternatives like fruit and granola bars!

If you start your kids right from the get go with fruits as sweets, you'll find they'll naturally go for the fruit.
